My speech in my colleague Stewart McDonald's Westminster Hall debate on the DWP proposed closure of half of Glasgow's Jobcentres. It's shameful - but sadly not unexpected - that the Tory government seek to use some of the most deprived areas in these isles as guinea pigs for their cuts programme. The attacks on our most vulnerable by the UK Government get worse every day; I and my colleagues across the city will fight this latest attack every step of the way.
PLANS have been announced to close more Jobcentres in Scotland. The Department of Work and Pensions has unveiled its UK wide proposals for reducing office space to cut costs. The announcement comes almost two months after the plans to shut half of Glasgow’s Jobcentres was revealed. The proposals include the closure of Port Glasgow and Alexandria Jobcentres moving to Greenock and Dumbarton respectively. The aim is to shut 134 job centres in total across the UK and a number of what the DWP call back offices. It will also shut two Glasgow city centre offices, Portcullis House in Charing Cross and another in Cadogan Street. The DWP said there would be no redundancies and operations would be located in other offices. Atlantic Quay and Northgate in the city centre are to be retained. The ...

Didn't realise my hands were so shaky when recording. :s Sorry! Anyway, before I filmed this, the polite young lady who is causing all the fuss was being extremely racist towards a black passenger, and because of that, when she was leaving the bus, people were saying all sorts of stuff towards her, which pretty much resulted in this.

Job Centre Plus AKA Dole Office, needs a huge overhaul. My solution merge Revenue & Customs and include Job Centre. That way all the crap Job Centre need to know about you is on the same system. Anyone work shy or abusing the system will be caught quicker, and the dithering about can all be done in the same building. Close the old job centres but LOW RENT THEM OUT (if owned, many are) so the money raised goes towards funding the system... but would this make too much sense? Overstaffed and over complicated procedures. Unhelpful staff and long winded procedures. Normally I am against closures and job losses but I struggle to think of reasons to keep these over-sized overstaffed offices open.
